who are some bands that aren't underground but aren't mainstream either - if they were on warp tour I don't want to hear them.

You might like of Montreal, and if you want one of the best mid-punk movement albums from the 70s get Television's "Marquee Moon."
I know Jake listens to Arcade Fire a lot, too. From what I have heard I like them as well.
